Family secrets, forbidden desire – and ghosts. Ibsen’s Ghosts are no spectral hauntings but absent people, events long buried, and the conventions that shape us and our lives…Ghosts we can’t shake off, or can we? Ibsen’s scandalous play « Ghosts » was entitled « Gengangere » in the original Danish for its double meaning not only of « ones who return » but also « events that repeat themselves. » This second meaning is particularly relevant in a play where the protagonists struggle to break free of convention and where past events inevitably mark the future. A scathing commentary on 19th century societal values, the play caused a furor when it opened. The themes, however, are timeless, touching on morality, hypocrisy, reputation, sacrifice and sense of duty – even to one’s own detriment. How much free will do we really have? Or does the past chart our future
